This comprehensive curriculum ensures students gain the technical skills, industry knowledge, and hands-on experience required to succeed in fiber optic splicing.
Training Program Outline:
- Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) training
 - Introduction to construction knowledge and industry best practices
 
- Fall Arrest training
 - Confined Space training
 - First Aid certification
 - Construction Safety Training System (CSTS)
 
- Understanding fiber optic color codes
 - Overview of different fiber types (multi-mode & single-mode)
 - Introduction to inside plant applications
 - Mechanical connectors and splicing machine fundamentals
 
- Reading civil and cable plans
 - Understanding dark fiber and sparring
 - Identifying components inside splices vs. bypassing sections
 - Stripping different coatings and opening up fibers for zebra/end splicing
 
- Continuing end-span splicing and introducing mid-span splicing
 - Testing procedures, including Visual Fault Locator (VFL) testing
 - Quality assurance (QA), quality control (QC), and reporting
 
- Building a small-scale fiber network
 - Team-based projects simulating real-world splice requests in handholes
 - Troubleshooting and verifying spliced segments
 
- Properly dressing vaults for fiber optic infrastructure
 - Handling and working with AFL cables
 
- Working on Fiber Distribution Hubs (FDH)
 - Completing a full fiber splicing project
 - One day of practical, on-site fieldwork experience
